Medical school chiefs have warned the country could have no researchers within a decade if significant funds are not pumped into training young medical researchers.
The heads of various medical schools briefed members of Parliament on Wednesday about the dire state of tertiary hospitals and the severe lack of an adequate medical workforce.
The University of Cape Town’s Head of Medicine, Bongani Mayosi, said many of those doing medical research are nearing the age of 60.
“We can see that that group who is older is accounting for a significant amount of research, meaning that we are not investing in younger people.”
